How to get started, and answers to the questions that come up most.

New to RSS?

Almost every blog and news site publishes a feed, a simple list of its newest posts. The Reading Room checks the feeds you choose and shows you what’s new, in order, with no algorithm in between. Inside the app, New to RSS? at the bottom of the sidebar (or Help › The Reading Room Guide on the Mac) walks you through it and suggests a few good people to follow.

Getting started

Add a feed

Press ⌘N, then paste a website address. The app finds its feed. Or type a few words, like pharmacy news, to follow that topic.

Make folders

Click the folder button next to Feeds, then drag feeds onto a folder.

Coming from another reader?

Export your subscriptions as an OPML file there, then choose Feeds › Import OPML…. Folders come along.

Reading

Click a story to read it in the app. View original opens the full web page in the app’s own window.

Select text in an article and choose Highlight or Add note. Find them all under Annotated.

Common questions

Some stories only show a summary.

A few sites keep their articles behind a paywall or build their pages with scripts the reader can’t use. Choose View original to read those on the site.

Where is my information stored?

Only on your devices, and in your own iCloud Drive if you turn on sync. See the privacy policy.

How do I move my feeds to another Mac?

Choose Feeds › Export OPML… on the old Mac and Import OPML… on the new one.
